Thank you for considering our school for your child, it really is a special place. Over half of our children come to us from outside our traditional catchment area so do not worry if you live a little further afield! Applications for a school place at Mugginton are done via the Derbyshire County Council admissions portal.

+ Who we are

We are very proud of our happy school and invite prospective parents to visit and learn more about our rich, engaging curriculum, high academic standards and wonderful, polite and friendly children. We aim to be a second family to our children and value nothing above developing deep and trusting relationships with pupils and parents. From this secure base, children can make outstanding progress and become the best person they can be. Read 'Things We Are Proud Of' here

+ What we value

We want our children to feel cared for and supported and develop relationships based on love, trust and empathy with an appreciation of the unique value of each individual. We offer a rich, exciting curriculum which fosters a love of Reading and encourages inquisitive minds. Our children spend a lot of time outdoors, for example in Forest Friday, and we promote an appreciation of nature.

In addition, we encourage our children to learn musical instruments (our music teacher, Corrina, delivers around 45 music lessons per week!) and to enjoy the arts. Children across the age-ranges are encouraged to speak and perform at our half-termly pupil-led Church Services. We believe in developing healthy minds and life-long active lifestyles. Our children have the opportunity to go running (with staff and parents!) on Tuesdays and Thursdays and we offer an extensive sports programme as part of our curriculum. This includes inter- and intra- sporting competition and after-school sports clubs. Read about some of the thinkers who inspire us here

+ How we help your child

We are very proud of our children’s academic progress. For example, over the last three years, our Year 6 children’s progress and attainment in Reading has been and remains in the top 10% of schools nationally. We achieve these Outstanding outcomes by motivating our children with stimulating and challenging teaching activities and the very highest of expectations for all. We are committed to low pupil-adult ratios because it allows us to better differentiate work so children across the academic spectrum can make outstanding progress.

+ The school day

Our school is open from 7.45am until 4.30pm, with the children in class from 9am until 3.30pm. Children can be dropped on the playground from 8.50am onwards and are brought into school by a member of staff at 9am. For a small charge, children can join Early Birds club and be dropped off at school from 7.45am. After school clubs are available to children from 3.30pm until 4.30pm every day. These include Football, Arts and Crafts, Dance and ICT clubs.

+ New Reception Starters

If you have a child due to start Reception in 2024, please feel free to arrange a visit to our school by telephoning the school office on 01335 360261 or emailing headteacher@mugginton.derbyshire.sch.uk

Starting Primary School is an exciting adventure for children and their families and we will work closely with you and with your child to make the transition a smooth and happy experience. Once you are notified of your child’s successful application for a place at Mugginton, we will contact you by telephone and letter to let you know more about school life and to invite you and your child in to school.

We run transition ‘taster’ mornings for new starters, one of which always includes lunchtime so the children can enjoy eating with their new friends and playing on the playground. However, we run an ‘open-door’ policy and are happy to meet with new parents and children and answer questions about school at any time. Our older children are incredibly caring and responsible. Please rest assured your child will be well looked-after from the moment they walk in to school. In the Summer term, Mrs Wallen, our Infant Class Lead, will visit your child in their pre-school environment to speak with their staff and learn more about your child.

There is no need to ‘prepare’ your child for their first day in September, but it is useful if they can use the toilet independently, can recognise their first name and can put on and take off their coat without help.

+ School meals

Children may bring a packed lunch from home or have a hot school meal. Our tasty school meals are delivered daily from a local school at a cost of £3.25 each. Lunch (dinner) money may be paid weekly or termly.

All infant children are eligible for a free school meal. See the menu here.

+ Transition to Secondary School

We know that the transition to secondary school is an important time in our children's lives. The majority of children who attend Mugginton transition to Ecclesbourne and QEGS at the end of Year 6. Former pupils often return to Mugginton on INSET days, which is always a pleasure. The additional responsibilities and opportunities we can offer our older children, plus the transition work we complete in partnership with secondary schools, means our children are ready to succeed at secondary school - even when their Mugginton friends have gone to a different school!

School Uniform
